Pinterest’s Place Pins now display Google Map directions, business info, and reviews

Place Pins updates

Nearly two years ago, Pinterest debuted Place Pins as a way to help you better plan trips. With this feature, people pinned specific activities, interest-based content, and more related to places where they’re looking to travel. Today this feature is being expanded to offer you more context around that location for a better overall experience.

Available on Pinterest’s iOS app starting today, Pinners will be able to receive directions to a pinned location through Google and Apple maps. In addition, contact information for places, including phone numbers and websites, will be available, as will the hours of operations and reviews from past patrons.

Not satisfied with just giving you exactly what you want, Pinterest has also added related information. If you find a restaurant you want to try or an attraction you’d like to check out, just pin it to a board. You’ll then also receive information on other places you might want to visit nearby, as well as pins from people who have saved the same place to their boards. The idea is to help keep you entertained — never on your trip should you leave a place wondering, “So now where do I go?”

Back in 2013, Pinterest chief executive Ben Silbermann said that 1.5 million travel-related pins were being added every day, totaling 750 million place pins. With this update, the company now says 7 billion pins have place information.

Going after the travel market isn’t a surprise, because Pinterest said this industry is a top 10 interest for its audience. The most pinned place in the world on the social network is Positano, in Campania, Italy. As for the United States? That’s Havasu Falls at the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Interestingly, New York City is only the 20th most popular place on Pinterest.

The updates are available on Pinterest’s iOS app starting today and will eventually come to Android and the Web.
