Microsoft Azure SQL Database gets Always Encrypted and Threat Detection features

Microsoft today announced several security-oriented improvements for Azure SQL Database, a managed relational database available on the Azure public cloud.

By the end of October, Microsoft will start public previews of a feature for Always Encrypted, which provides encryption of data in transit, at rest, and in use for its Azure SQL Database service. Always Encrypted was first introduced as part of SQL Server 2016. A public preview of Threat Detection, a feature that provides alerts about potential security threats, on Azure SQL Database will also begin at the end of this month.

Meanwhile, a pair of security features previously announced for Azure SQL Database are being moved forward. Transparent Data Encryption and Dynamic Data Masking will both hit general availability by the end of the month.

Earlier, Microsoft announced that Azure Active Directory support is in public preview, and Row-Level Security became generally available in August.

The domain of the relational database is core to Microsoft, where SQL Server is a $5 billion business. So in the public cloud, Microsoft wants to have a truly enterprise-ready offering. Public cloud market leader Amazon Web Services has been investing more in relational database engines, and it only makes sense that Microsoft makes the most of its existing know-how and builds what its database customers want.

Reliable encryption is an obvious thing to add, and threat detection is also understandable, particularly now that AWS has introduced a service to automatically find potential security issues.

The new Threat Detection tool can be hooked up to the Azure Portal, or it can “surface information about suspicious events directly to the subscription administrator,” Microsoft corporate vice president T.K. “Ranga” Rengarajan wrote in a blog post announcing the feature.
