Customs computer systems reportedly down at multiple U.S. airports

United Airlines planes are seen on platform at the Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, July 8, 2015.

Thousands of passengers are said to be backed up in the line at Customs at several U.S. airports because of the failure of Customs computer systems.

Social media reports of the outages began showing up at around 8 p.m. Eastern time.

So far the reports have identified the problem at New York’s JFK, Boston Logan, San Francisco International Airport, Baltimore-Washington International Airport, Atlanta’s Hartsfield Jackson Airport, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Charlotte Douglas International Airport, and possibly other airports.

CNBC is reporting that the computer systems in question is the ones that check airline passenger names against the Homeland Security terror watch list.

As of now the Department of Homeland Security hasn’t confirmed the problems at its website or on social media channels.

NBC New York is reporting that a “glitch” in the Homeland Security computer systems is causing backups at JFK. NBC News quotes high level government officials saying that a glitch in the security systems has indeed occurred, and could not provide an estimated resolution time.
