Apple introduces new Retina displays for Macs amid reports sales may be slowing

New Macs with Retina displays.

Apple is expanding the lineup of its iMacs with Retina displays. Will these brighter, faster, higher-resolution models be attractive enough to boost sales?

In a press release, the company said the 21.5-inch iMac is getting the Retina 4K display, while the 27-inch iMac will now have a Retina 5K display.

In addition, the company said it was rolling out a host of new wireless accessories, including a Magic Trackpad that will feature the Force Touch interface. The new Magic keyboard and mouse will have rechargeable batteries.

“From the first iMac to today, the spirit of iMac has never wavered — deliver the ultimate desktop experience with the latest technologies, gorgeous displays and cutting-edge designs,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, in a press release. “These are the most stunning iMacs we’ve ever made. With our gorgeous new Retina displays, more powerful processors and graphics and all-new Magic accessories, the new iMac continues to redefine the ultimate desktop experience.”

The new models arrive just as recent reports have indicated that sales of Macs may be either falling or slowing. In recent years, Apple has been able to boast that Macs have been growing nicely despite a broader, rapid decline in PC sales.

The 27-inch iMac is available today starting at $1,799. The 21.5-inch iMac is also available starting at $1,099.
